Why is Mother’s Day on another date worldwide?

It seems that most countries of the world put aside a special day each year to celebrate their mothers and the miracle of motherhood, with the vast majority celebrating on 12th May this year.

International Mother's Day Hampers

In the UK we celebrate on Mothering Sunday, which is the fourth Sunday of Lent, (and is also approximately 40 weeks before Christmas Day!), a traditional Christian day to go home and visit your mother church.

The majority of countries however, celebrate Mother’s day on the second Sunday in May. It is believed it originated in America in the early 20th century when one woman pushed hard for a day to celebrate all mother’s after the death of her own; with much hard work the President granted an official holiday in 1914.  However, May is also the Month of Mary in the Catholic Church, and there are many rituals and celebrations to honour her and this may be another reason for the date around the world.

Countries that celebrate Mother’s day on 12th May include Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, United States.
