Welcome Home Celebration Party for Sarah Outen

Hay Hampers is delighted to sponsor the celebration party for Sarah Outen at the Whipper Inn, Oakham on Saturday 17th October, with her own label sparkling wine showing Sarah arriving in Mauritius after a 124 day journey covering 4,000 miles from the west coast of Australia in her boat Serendipity in August 2009.

Sarah was at Stamford School with our three boys and we have known her family for many years. Sarah first practised rowing in Rutland Water with our sons! Sarah dedicated her trip to her father, Derek, who died suddenly in 2006 when she was studying at the University of Oxford. Her mother, Helen, has been amazing in courageously supporting Sarah in her efforts to raise money for Arthritis Care Charity in memory of her father.

Sarah has broken three world records to be the first woman and youngest of only 4 people to row solo across the Indian Ocean, as well as the youngest of only 8 women to have solo rowed any ocean. Whilst Sarah was rowing alone, the whole project has been a huge team effort. Sarah says: ‘I couldn’t have succeeded without the generous support of companies like Hay Hampers.’

During her 124 day solo row across the Indian Ocean from Australia to the paradise island of Mauritius, Sarah struggled with 100 foot waves, raging storms and searing heat. Sarah nearly did not finish the record breaking crossing as she was met by 40ft crashing waves a few hundred yards from the finishing line in Mauritius. Sarah’s boat Serendipity capsized dashing her against coral reefs. Amazingly Sarah managed to summon the energy to hurl herself back into the boat and complete the crossing and enter into the record books on 3rd August 2009. So when Sarah says she hit Mauritius, she well and truly did!

Jeremy, Rachel, Charlie, Jamie & Tom and all the Hay Hampers team were thrilled to follow Sarah’s daily rowing adventures and to be part of her Welcome Home Party with her mother Helen and brothers Michael & Matthew. We wish Sarah every success in her future adventures and know she will have a great career speaking about her journeys and motivating others to believe that ‘all things are possible’ and we look forward to reading her book next year!
